Abdominoplasty under Dr. Afridi's Expert Care
Procedures by Dr. Afridi

Nadia Afridi, M.D., F.R.C.S.

Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) under Dr. Afridi's Expert Care

Abdominoplasty, often called a "tummy tuck," is a very popular surgery in the U.S.A. Tummy tucks help to flatten and shape the abdomen and waist by removing excess fat and skin and tightening muscles. Dr. Afridi has been performing abdominoplasties with excellent cosmetic results and high patient satisfaction for many years.

Who is a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

The best candidates for abdominoplasty are in good physical condition with pockets of fat or loose skin that haven't responded well to diet and exercise. Dr. Afridi can also help older, slightly obese people whose skin has lost some of its elasticity.

Abdominoplasty can also be useful for women with stretched skin and muscles from pregnancy. The tummy can stretch and sag once more if women continue to bear children, so Dr. Afridi advises patients who plan to become pregnant to delay abdominoplasty.

She also encourages patients who intend to lose a lot of weight to wait before undergoing the procedure, since skin in the abdominal area typically loosens after substantial weight loss.

Customized Treatment for Optimal Cosmetic Results

Dr. Afridi takes the time during every pre-operative consultation in her Manhattan office to learn what her patients want to achieve from a tummy tuck both for their bodies and for their self-confidence. By listening to what patients have to say and closely examining them rather than performing a one-size-fits-all procedure on every person, she provides patients with completely customized treatment that takes into account their specific goals.

Types of Abdominoplasty at Dr. Afridi's Office

The Traditional Tummy Tuck Procedure

A traditional abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) surgery takes approximately two to five hours under general anesthesia. Dr. Afridi will make two incisions: one from hipbone to hipbone close to the pubic area, and another around the navel. She will separate the skin from the abdominal muscles, which are then pulled together and stitched into place for a firmer abdomen and narrower waist. She will stretch the skin flap down and over the newly tightened muscles, remove excess skin, and reattach the navel in a natural position. Finally, she will close the incisions and apply sterile surgical dressings over the sutured areas.

Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) trims excess, sagging skin and reduces stretch marks to give Dr. Afridi's patients firmer, younger-looking tummies.

Partial Abdominoplasty ("Mini Tummy TuckÓ)

Partial abdominoplasty is similar to abdominoplasty except a shorter incision is made and the skin is only lifted to the navel, which does not have to be moved.

Circumferential Abdominoplasty (Body Lift)

Also called belt lipectomy or torsoplasty, the circumferential body lift is performed to remove excess skin from the abdomen and torso. Body lifts tighten and tone the abdomen, back, buttocks, hips and thighs.

Candidates for body lifts typically suffer from loose (inelastic) skin on many or most areas of the body as a result of age, childbearing or significant weight loss due to diet, exercise or bariatric surgery. Because of this, the procedure is often combined with others such as breast lifts, arm lifts and liposuction to retain an attractive body proportion.

High Lateral Tension Abdominoplasty

A high lateral tension abdominoplasty combines the effects of a tummy tuck and a lateral thigh lift without the need to undergo an extensive body lift. The resulting scar is a little longer and is located slightly higher up the sides of the abdomen than the scar created by a regular abdominoplasty.

Recovery after Abdominoplasty

A temporary tube may be inserted to drain excess fluid from the surgical site.

Recovery time ranges from two weeks to a few months.

Tummy Tuck Results

Abdominoplasty will leave a scar spanning the lower abdomen from hip to hip. Dr. Afridi makes every attempt to place the scar low enough to be concealed by a bikini or underwear, although this is never guaranteed.

With a balanced diet and regular exercise, results are long-lasting.

Risks of Abdominoplasty

Though rare, post-operative complications from surgery are possible. They may include infection, blood clots, and poor healing, which may require further surgery.

Patients who have had previous abdominal surgery should know that their old scars could be raised, stretched or generally more noticeable after the procedure. A scar revision procedure after abdominoplasty may minimize the appearance of an unsightly scar.
